Why Woodhaven matters
Woodhaven is one of Downriver's youngest towns: it broke away from Brownstown Township as a village in 1961 and became a city on December 7, 1965. I-75 splits it north to south, and the shopping grew up along the freeway: Woodhaven Commons started with a Kmart in 1971, and Woodhaven Village Square went up between 2001 and 2005 on the site of a former refinery and cannery.
It's an industrial town too. Mobil Oil built a refinery at Allen and West roads in the 1930s, by the 1960s the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railroad had a switchyard here, and in 1964 Ford opened the Woodhaven Stamping Plant, which presses body panels and chassis parts for Ford assembly plants.
A bit of local lore: for decades a tiny 1870s log cabin stood at Hall and West roads, a gift from the Lions Club to the village in the 1950s. It came down in 2012, and the Woodhaven Fountain, kept up by the garden club, stands there now. Dog owners, head to WOOFhaven in Civic Center Park.
