Michigan · 10 Denny’s · 7 open around the clock
Denny’s is America’s always-open diner: booths, a counter, bottomless coffee and breakfast at any hour. Hungary has none, and all of Europe has one. Michigan has 10, and 7 of them never close. Here they all are with a map and live hours, the closed ones too, and the chain’s story, from a California donut shop to the birth of Nvidia.

02 / Architecture
In the 1950s Denny’s helped spread Googie, the Space Age coffee-shop style: Los Angeles architects Armet & Davis drew a prototype with a boomerang-shaped roof, followed in 1965 by a zigzag shingled roof. The 1997 Classic Diner went back further, to the fifties stainless-steel dining car.216

From a California donut shop to one of America’s best-known diner chains, with the Michigan moments highlighted.
Harold Butler and Richard Jezak opened Danny’s Donuts at Bellflower and Del Amo boulevards in the new suburb of Lakewood, south of Los Angeles. The roughly 900-square-foot coffee-and-doughnut shop never closed.20219
The Los Angeles chain Coffee Dan’s objected to the similar name, so Butler changed one vowel: Danny’s Coffee Shops became Denny’s Coffee Shops. From 1961 it was simply Denny’s.20219
Denny’s began franchising in 1963. Most restaurants are now franchised, and the agreements require 24/7 service at most locations, a rule loosened after the pandemic.2

Coolcaesar, CC BY-SA 4.0In the early 1990s Black customers and six Black Secret Service agents sued the chain. The 1994 settlement paid $46 million to the plaintiffs, usually quoted as $54 million with legal fees; afterwards the company changed its hiring and supplier programs.27228
