Why Flat Rock matters
Flat Rock sits where the Huron River forms the Wayne-Monroe county line: most of the city is in Wayne, with a sliver in Monroe. It began as a Wyandot settlement and was still listed as a reservation in 1830. The first Euro-American settlers, Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons, arrived between 1811 and 1820, and the place was known as the Village of Vreeland until 1838.
Henry Ford rewrote the 20th century here. His village industries plan aimed to spread production out to rural plants, so an Albert Kahn-designed lamp factory went up on the river with hydroelectric generators, a dam and a water plant for the village. A 1926 newspaper predicted Flat Rock would grow like a forest fire, and those factory jobs carried the town through the Depression. The plant closed in 1950.
The car business never left. Ford opened a casting plant here in 1972, where on January 25, 1979, Robert Williams was killed by a robotic arm, the first person known to have died that way. The plant closed in 1981, reopened in 1987 as Mazda's first U.S. factory, has been all Ford since 2012, and has built the Mustang since 2005. On Saturday nights, race cars circle the quarter-mile Flat Rock Speedway oval on Telegraph Road just south of town.
