01 / Why it matters
Warren is Detroit's biggest suburb and its next-door neighbor to the north: a six-by-six-mile square running from 8 Mile to 14 Mile, with Center Line carved out of the middle. Drive Van Dyke or Mound and you'll pass factory halls, industrial parks and block after block of postwar bungalows.
Warren's real story is industry. Chrysler's truck plant opened in 1938, the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant went up in 1940, and in 1956 General Motors dedicated its Technical Center, where the company still designs and engineers its vehicles. The jobs brought the people, and a township of farms became one of Michigan's biggest cities within a few decades.
That boom had a dark side: for decades Warren stayed almost entirely white, and in 1970 only 28 minority families lived here, most of them on a military base. The picture has changed a lot since then: in the 2020 census about one in five residents was African American, and the Hmong and Bangladeshi communities were growing fast.

The General Motors Technical Center, Eero Saarinen's midcentury-modern campus, dedicated in 1956 and a National Historic Landmark since 2014.
The Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant, the first American plant built to mass-produce tanks, which turned out a quarter of all US tanks in World War II.
The Detroit Arsenal is still an active Army installation, home to TACOM and the Army's Ground Vehicle Systems Center.
Warren Truck Assembly has been building vehicles since 1938; it was nicknamed “Dodge City” until the mid-2000s, and since a conversion finished in 2020 it has built the Jeep Wagoneer.
Detroit Memorial Park Cemetery, founded by Black investors in 1925 as Michigan's first Black-owned cemetery; inventor Elijah McCoy and Supremes singer Florence Ballard are buried here.
Its entire southern border is 8 Mile Road, so Warren literally starts where Detroit ends.

Charles Groesbeck settles at Mound and Chicago roads; as Beebe's Corners, the spot becomes a carriage stop between Detroit and Utica.
The township, first called Hickory and then Aba, takes the name Warren for good.
The Village of Warren incorporates on one square mile between 13 Mile and 14 Mile.
