01 / Why it matters
Hamtramck is its own small city, surrounded almost entirely by Detroit except for a short border with Highland Park. In the 20th century it was a hub of Polish American life: workers poured in for the Dodge plant, and the population multiplied between 1910 and 1920. Polish names still hang over the shops, now next to businesses run by Yemeni, Bangladeshi and Bosnian families.
It became a city in 1922 specifically so Detroit couldn't annex it. Since around 2013 it's been known as the first Muslim-majority city in the country, and in November 2021 it elected a mayor and a full council who are all Muslim, a first for any American city.
For you it's a place to explore on foot: the shops on Joseph Campau, Polish bakeries on Fat Tuesday, a wild backyard folk-art installation and two historic ballparks. Detroit City FC plays in one; Negro league legends once played in the other.

Hamtramck Township was created and settled by French settlers from Quebec.
Part of the township became a village, still mostly home to German farmers.
The Dodge brothers' plant, Dodge Main, opened, and thousands of Polish immigrants came for the jobs.
Hamtramck incorporated as a city to keep Detroit from annexing it.
Dodge Main closed; General Motors built a new plant on its site and on the homes of Detroit's neighboring Poletown, opening in 1985.
On September 19 Pope John Paul II addressed Polish Americans in Hamtramck; he had first visited as a cardinal in 1969.
