Why Grosse Pointe Woods matters

Grosse Pointe Woods is the younger face of the Pointes: people have lived here for more than a century, but most of today's city went up around and just after World War II. So you get fewer old estates and more postwar family homes than in the Pointes to the south.

It's the only one of the five Grosse Pointes without its own Lake St. Clair shoreline. Its beach, Lake Front Park, is actually over the line in St. Clair Shores, and it's for residents only.

For a visitor, Mack Avenue is the street to know: it's the main business strip, with shops, restaurants and City Hall. The city is also home to University Liggett School, Michigan's oldest independent school.

The only Grosse Pointe with no lakeshore; its lakefront park is in neighboring St. Clair Shores.
Home of University Liggett School, Michigan's oldest independent school.
The Lochmoor Club's golf course has been here since 1918.

06 / History

Grosse Pointe Woods through the years

1917
The Lochmoor Club was founded on February 23; its golf course opened on June 29, 1918.
1927
On January 4 the Village of Lochmoor was incorporated from the last unincorporated part of Grosse Pointe Township.
1931
The village annexed the Stanhope-Allard strip from what was then Gratiot Township.
1939
In March the Village of Lochmoor renamed itself Grosse Pointe Woods.
1950
On December 11 it incorporated as a city.
1956
On June 17 the War Memorial Peace Garden was dedicated at Lake Front Park.
