01 / Why it matters
Belleville grew up on the Huron River: the town was platted in 1847, and Main, Liberty and High Streets are still the main drags. Sawmills worked the riverbanks, the town became a village in 1905 and a city on May 14, 1946. Van Buren Township surrounds it on all sides.
The big change came in the mid-1920s, when Detroit Edison's French Landing Dam backed the Huron up into Belleville Lake. Six miles long, it's the biggest inland lake in Wayne County, downtown sits on its south shore, and city folks started coming out for summers on the water. From 1977 to 2019 the town also hosted the National Strawberry Festival every summer.
It's a music pilgrimage stop too. In the late 1970s and early '80s, Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson became friends at Belleville High School; as the Belleville Three they're credited with inventing Detroit techno. They were among the few Black students at the school, and their taste was shaped by The Electrifying Mojo's late-night Detroit radio show.
