Why Allen Park matters
Most people know Allen Park from the freeway: the 80-foot Uniroyal tire along I-94 started life as a Ferris wheel at the 1964 New York World's Fair. It rolled in on 22 trucks in 1966 and has been waving at drivers ever since.
The city grew up next to Ford, and plenty of the company's offices and facilities sit inside its limits. Since 2002 it's also been home to the Detroit Lions' headquarters and practice facility, renamed the Meijer Performance Center in 2024. Every summer the downtown street fair takes over; it started in 1966, and the 60th-anniversary edition ran August 7–8, 2026.
For Hungarians this is a must-stop: Allen Park is home to the American Hungarian Reformed Church. The congregation built its church in Delray, Detroit's Hungarian neighborhood, in 1941 and put up a new one in Allen Park in 1965. Of the four Hungarian Reformed congregations that once served the Detroit area, it's the only one still standing.
