Wylie E. Groves High School opened in 1959 in the Birmingham Public Schools district, named for Wylie E. Groves, a longtime school board treasurer. In a 1975 drama class here, students Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell struck up a friendship and creative partnership that led them to start making amateur horror films together, work that eventually grew into 1981's The Evil Dead and a decades-long collaboration spanning the Evil Dead and Spider-Man franchises. Sam's younger brother Ted Raimi attended Groves in the early 1980s, playing blues harmonica, working as a school DJ and joining the Groves Cinema Society before becoming an actor himself. Singer-songwriter Mike Posner graduated from Groves in 2006 and later returned to film a music video on its campus. The suburban Oakland County school still enrolls roughly a thousand students today as part of the Birmingham school district.
