03 / The story of this place
What was here?
Boyne City residents who wanted a first-class hotel built this Classical Revival landmark on Water Street, and it opened on February 1, 1912, in the middle of the lumber boom. Wesley Dilworth bought it in 1936 and renamed it the Dilworth Hotel. In the 1930s and 1940s the annual Boyne City Smelt Run Banquet made it known across the country. After many owners it struggled, and it closed in 2008. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1986.
