03 / The story of this place

What’s it like to stay here?

The Book brothers opened the Book-Cadillac in December 1924 to outdo every other hotel in Detroit; Louis Kamper designed the tower, and it opened with 1,136 rooms. It later ran as the Sheraton-Cadillac, the Detroit-Cadillac and the Radisson Cadillac, closed in October 1984 and sat empty for more than two decades. A roughly $200 million restoration brought it back in October 2008 as the Westin Book Cadillac, with 455 hotel rooms and condos on the upper floors. Baseball history happened here too: Lou Gehrig collapsed on the grand staircase in May 1939, before his consecutive-games streak came to an end. Today you'll find an indoor pool, the Venetian and Crystal ballrooms and a centennial history exhibit made with the Detroit Historical Museum.
