Chrysler opened the plant now known as Warren Truck Assembly in 1938 on Mound Road in Warren, just north of Detroit, and it has built trucks continuously ever since, earning the nickname 'Dodge City' for decades of Dodge truck production, including nearly 6.8 million trucks built between 1938 and 1985. Joe Billingslea, an original member of the Motown vocal group the Contours who sang lead on parts of 'Do You Love Me,' worked at the plant from 1964 to 1968, balancing factory work with his music career, and was elected chief steward of his UAW local in 1965. The plant went on to build the Dodge Dakota pickup from 1987 to 2011 and later became the exclusive home of Ram 1500 Rebel production. Now owned by Stellantis, Warren Truck Assembly remains an active auto plant, one of the last of its kind still running in Detroit's inner suburbs.
