Walter P. Chrysler founded Chrysler Corporation in 1925 after making his name rescuing Buick and other struggling automakers, and by the time he died in 1940 his company was one of Detroit's Big Three. The museum bearing his name opened in October 1999 on the grounds of Chrysler's Auburn Hills technology center, filling two floors with restored Chryslers, Dodges, Plymouths, DeSotos and Jeeps that charted the company's rise from the 1920s onward. Money troubles during Chrysler's bankruptcy years caught up with it, and the museum closed its doors in December 2012. It reopened briefly on weekends in 2016 before the company, needing the space for offices, shut it for good on December 18, 2016. The building still stands as part of the Stellantis technology campus, but it's no longer open to visitors, and much of the car collection has been dispersed to other Stellantis facilities and events.
