Uptown BBQ has been smoking ribs on Livernois Avenue since August 1989, with owner Nathaniel Fanning and his family running the show. It's a take-out joint: you order through the window in the Plexiglas and leave with slabs glazed in a thick, deep red, slightly sweet sauce, rib tips or shrimp, plus mac and cheese and other soul food sides. Family recipes, secret sauce. They cater year-round with 48 hours' notice.
