United Memorial Gardens has served families in the western suburbs of Detroit since it opened in 1929, spreading across Superior Township land near Plymouth. Jazz trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, who moved to Detroit in 1963 and spent the rest of his life playing and teaching there, was buried here after his death in 2015. Belgrave had performed with Ray Charles and Motown session bands before settling into his role as one of Detroit jazz's most important mentors, training generations of musicians including Geri Allen, Regina Carter and Kenny Garrett through his decades of teaching around the city. The cemetery remains active today, and his grave sits among the many families it continues to serve. The grounds spread across more than a hundred acres and include a life-size replica of the Biblical tabernacle, built in 1985, alongside the many family plots.
