The 1,800-seat Tuxedo opened on October 28, 1921, with Wanda Hawley in Her Face Value plus vaudeville. It was designed by Maurice H. Finkel, architect of the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor. It belonged to Charles W. Munz's group of theatres, which Munz sold to Paramount's Publix chain in 1929. Wisper & Wetsman ran it later on. It closed in 1958 and was torn down about ten years later.

Independent films directed, written or produced by Black filmmakers, at a Detroit festival Lazar and Marshalle Favors started in 2020. The 7th edition in September 2026 screens 89 films from 30 countries, with the Charles H. Wright Museum as its hub.
