Developer Lew Tuller opened the Hotel Tuller in 1906 as the first grand hotel of Detroit's Grand Circus Park district, with nine floors that grew to fourteen by 1910 and, after a further 1914 addition, to 550 rooms, making it for a time the city's largest and tallest hotel. Its success touched off a building boom that turned the area into a major hub of hotels, offices and theaters through the 1920s. By the 1970s the once-grand hotel had declined into a low-end extended-stay property, and it closed in 1976. Its shuttered, decaying lobby and rooms briefly returned to use in 1983-84, when Detroit filmmakers Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell used the empty hotel as the set for the fictional 'Cafe Rialto' in their film Crimewave. The abandoned building was finally razed in 1992, and the site at Grand Circus Park is now a parking lot beside the United Artists Theatre Building.
