Trans-Love Energies started in Detroit in 1967 as a loose collective of musicians, artists and activists around Leni and John Sinclair, but in May 1968 the group moved to Ann Arbor and settled into two large, sixteen-to-eighteen-room Victorian houses at 1510 and 1520 Hill Street, near the University of Michigan campus. About twenty-eight people lived there at once, including the members of the rock band MC5, whom the Sinclairs managed, along with children, other musicians, artists and the staff of underground newspapers the group published. The commune, which also became associated with John Sinclair's White Panther Party, ran its music management, publishing and political organizing out of these houses into the early 1970s. The buildings survived, and since 1986 they've housed the Luther Buchele Cooperative House, a University of Michigan student housing co-op that still occupies the same two properties today.
