The Shoe Box opened in September 2017 on Livernois Avenue's Avenue of Fashion with a simple pitch: buy your dress shoes in the neighborhood instead of driving out to a suburban mall. It comes from Al Bartell, the menswear veteran behind Times Square clothing on the same strip, who likes to say you can get away with an inexpensive suit but never with cheap-looking shoes. A 2025 PBS report noted that his nephew Aaron now runs the shop on Williamsburg Row.
