01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
Detroit's Thanksgiving parade dates to 1924, and since 1982 a nonprofit foundation has run it, with The Parade Company as its operating arm. The team also produces Ford Fireworks, the Turkey Trot and the Hob Nobble Gobble gala, backed by about 1,500 volunteers. The real treat for visitors is the studio tour: an hour walking through 200,000 square feet of floats, giant papier-mâché heads and more than 3,000 costumes. A $45 million campaign aims to move the operation into the 1930 Brodhead Armory on the riverfront.
