The Hip Hop Shop was a clothing store opened in 1993 by designer Maurice Malone on West Seven Mile Road, but it became famous for its Saturday afternoon open-mic contests (4–6 pm) hosted by the rapper Proof. It turned into a main proving ground of Detroit hip-hop: Eminem was filmed battling there in 1996, members of D12 and Slum Village and producer J Dilla came through as young artists, and its battles inspired the rap-battle scenes of the film “8 Mile.” The shop closed in 1997 when Malone and his partner Jerome Mongo moved to New York to focus on the clothing line.
