St. Joseph Church (Wyandotte)
A German-founded Catholic parish in Wyandotte whose current 1960 church carries a relief of its patron saint carved by Hungarian-American sculptor Ferenc Varga.

Make time for these
German Catholic workers in Wyandotte organized St. Joseph Parish in 1870, and their first brick church went up the next year at Fourth and Elm streets. By the 1950s the growing parish needed more room, so the congregation built a new church across the street, breaking ground in 1958 and dedicating the building in May 1960. For the new church, the parish commissioned Hungarian-American sculptor Ferenc Varga to carve a relief of Saint Joseph, work he completed sometime in the 1950s and 1960s alongside other commissions across metro Detroit. St. Joseph later joined with St. Patrick Parish to form today's St. Vincent Pallotti Parish, but the 1960 church on Elm Street still serves as one of its two worship sites.
