St. Clair Shores built its Civic Arena as the town's year-round ice rink, and it has stayed the neighborhood's hub for hockey leagues, figure skating clubs and open skate ever since. In 2014 the city renamed the arena's Olympia Room rink in honor of Mark Wells, a St. Clair Shores kid who grew up skating on local ponds and rinks before making the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team. Wells was on the ice for the "Miracle on Ice" win over the Soviet Union at Lake Placid and took home gold at those Winter Games. The rink named for him keeps that local Olympic story alive for the next generation of skaters coming through the same building.
