Polish immigrants began arriving in Detroit in the 1850s, but it took until 1872 for the community to get its own parish, when Reverend Simon Wieczorek founded St. Albertus. The brick Polish Gothic church that still stands at St. Aubin and Canfield streets was designed by architect Henry Engelbert and dedicated on July 4, 1885, and it became the first church in Detroit with steam heat and electric lighting. Bishop Caspar Henry Borgess placed the parish under interdict in 1885 during a bitter dispute over control of its pastor and property, a conflict that briefly made national headlines and reflected wider tensions between immigrant congregations and the American Catholic hierarchy. St. Albertus anchored Detroit's Polish community for over a century, but declining membership led the Archdiocese of Detroit to close it as an active parish in 1990, part of a broader wave of church closures in the city's older neighborhoods. The building survives today as a Michigan State Historic Site and a National Register listing, still hosting occasional Masses in Polish, English, and Latin, weddings, and tours run by a preservation group.
