01 / The story of this place

SME was founded in January 1932, in the depths of the Depression, by 33 engineers and mechanics at the Detroit College of Applied Science, originally as the Society of Tool Engineers. Membership jumped from 8,700 to nearly 18,000 during World War II as members helped retool American industry for the war effort. Headquarters moved from Dearborn to Southfield in 2018, and today it covers everything from 3D printing and automation to machining.
