Shout occupied the former Eastown Theatre, an 800-seat movie house that opened in 1936 as Grand Rapids' first air-conditioned theatre and later ran as the Eastown Bijou. Robert VanDrunnen and Scott Vokoun bought the building in 1987 and in 1988 opened Shout, a 1950s-60s themed dance club with a Corvette bursting through the wall, a '59 Edsel over the bar, a pink Cadillac on the dance floor and staff who performed skits and games. It became Grand Rapids' hottest club but ended abruptly in 1992 when VanDrunnen was sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax evasion.
