Saint Martin de Porres High School operated as a Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit school on Grove Street, in a building that had earlier served as Precious Blood Catholic School. Basketball player Daedra Charles, who would go on to star at the University of Tennessee, win an NCAA championship, and take home an Olympic bronze medal with Team USA in 1992, played here in the 1980s and was named a Parade All-American, one of the highest honors in American high school basketball. The school served a co-educational student body of a few hundred students through the early 2000s. Facing falling enrollment across its Detroit school system, the Archdiocese closed Saint Martin de Porres in 2005 along with several other city parish schools. The building on Grove Street still stands on Detroit's west side today, one of many former Catholic school buildings that outlived the parishes and student bodies that once filled them.
