Sacred Heart Major Seminary was founded in 1919 to train priests for the Archdiocese of Detroit, and its Gothic Revival building on West Chicago Boulevard was completed in the 1923–1924 period. Future Cardinal Edmund Szoka, who went on to lead the Detroit archdiocese and later serve as a top Vatican financial official, completed his junior and senior seminary studies there in the 1940s. James Aloysius Hickey, later a cardinal and Archbishop of Washington, graduated as valedictorian from the seminary in 1942. Archbishop Allen Vigneron trained for the priesthood there in the late 1960s and later returned to teach and serve as rector between 1994 and 2003, while Bishop Michael J. Byrnes served as vice rector starting in 2004. The seminary remains active today, continuing to train priests and lay ministers for the Detroit archdiocese and beyond.
