The Rosa Parks Transit Center opened on July 14, 2009, at the corner of Michigan and Cass avenues in downtown Detroit, between the People Mover's Michigan Avenue and Times Square stations. The three-story, roughly 25,700-square-foot building, designed by Parsons Brinckerhoff with a canopy by Detroit firm FTL Design Engineering Studio, serves as the hub for about 27 Detroit Department of Transportation bus routes, along with SMART regional buses, a Megabus stop, a Transit Windsor tunnel bus connection, an indoor waiting area and a Detroit Police mini-station. It was named for Rosa Parks, the civil rights activist whose 1955 refusal to give up her bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama, helped spark the modern civil rights movement and who lived in Detroit from 1957 until her death in 2005. The transit center continues to operate as one of the city's busiest transportation hubs.
