Annemarie and George Roeper, both refugees from Nazi Germany, founded the school in 1941 to educate gifted children in a way that took their emotional lives as seriously as their intellect, an approach the school still emphasizes today. The lower school settled onto a wooded campus on Woodward Avenue in Bloomfield Hills, and in 1981 Roeper opened a second campus in Birmingham for middle and high schoolers, in a former public elementary school building. Generations of Detroit-area kids have gone through Roeper's small classes and project-based classrooms. Figure skater Charlie White, an Olympic gold medalist, attended Roeper from nursery school through high school in the 1990s and 2000s, and actor John Marshall Jones was a student there in the 1970s. The school still runs on the same two campuses today, serving preschool through twelfth grade.
