Redford High School opened in September 1921 at the corner of Grand River Avenue and McNichols Road in northwest Detroit and grew into one of the city's largest public high schools. Actor George C. Scott, later an Academy Award winner for Patton, attended Redford in the 1940s before leaving Detroit. The school closed in June 2007 as Detroit Public Schools consolidated its shrinking enrollment, and the roughly one-million-square-foot building sat empty and deteriorating for five years. Meijer, Inc. bought the site, and the vacant school was demolished in September 2012 to make way for a new Meijer supercenter with a grocery and garden center, which opened on the site and still operates there today.
