The stop’s story
In the city’s data the stop is still called “Foxtown Station”, after the neighborhood named for the Fox Theatre. Designed by C. Howard Crane and opened in 1928, the movie palace was the city’s largest theater with 5,048 seats, and it remains the largest surviving movie palace of the 1920s. Across the street, on the old Detroit College of Law site, the Detroit Tigers have played at Comerica Park since 2000, and on the corner stands St. John’s Episcopal Church, the oldest church still standing on Woodward.
In 2017 the stop was sponsored by Ilitch Holdings; the Ilitch family backed the streetcar from the very start. After the first year the signals at Montcalm were retimed to keep the streetcar moving.
The Tigers played their first game at Comerica Park on April 11, 2000, on a snowy afternoon of 36 °F. The ballpark’s name is changing too: after Fifth Third Bank acquired Comerica in February 2026, it is due to become Fifth Third Park before the 2027 season.
