Rick Manore opened C-Pop Gallery in a Royal Oak church basement in 1996, focused on rock posters and the emerging lowbrow and pop-surrealist art movements, and after a stop inside the David Whitney Building downtown, the gallery settled into its best-known home at 4160 Woodward Avenue in Midtown Detroit in 1999, in the former Detroit Bowling & Trophy storefront near the Majestic Theatre. Under owner Tom Thewes, the space became one of Detroit's key showcases for pop culture-inspired art, cartoon and comic influences, and edgier work that mainstream galleries avoided. Niagara, the Destroy All Monsters and Dark Carnival singer and painter, had a string of solo shows here starting in 1996 that helped build her reputation as a visual artist alongside her music career. C-Pop Gallery closed its Woodward Avenue doors in the summer of 2009, and the storefront now houses a different business.
