Pontiac Central High School traced its roots to 1849 and, under that name from 1958 on, occupied a series of buildings at Huron and Williams streets, the last a precast concrete structure built in 1972. Jack Kevorkian, later notorious as "Dr. Death" for assisting in terminally ill patients' deaths, graduated with honors from the school in 1945 at age seventeen. The school closed permanently on June 12, 2009, when it was consolidated with Pontiac Northern High School to form a single Pontiac High School housed elsewhere. The vacant building suffered years of flooding, fire damage and vandalism before it was sold in 2015 to a contracting firm; the city later moved its Department of Public Works operations onto the site, repurposing rather than demolishing the old school.
