Pit & Balcony started in 1932, when seven members of the American Association of University Women began reading and acting out plays in their homes. Within a year it had more than 200 members and was performing in a carriage house nicknamed “the Barn,” until it burned in January 1943 and shows moved to the downtown Masonic Temple. In 1948 the group bought land at North Hamilton and Throop streets, members pitched in on construction, and the first play in the new building opened in fall 1949. The name is a Shakespearean joke: the house has neither an orchestra pit nor a balcony, so the groundlings and the nobility sit in the same room. Season 95 (2026-27) brings Clue: The Musical, Native Gardens and Lizzie: The Rock Musical.
