Ann Arbor's professional Equity theater started in 1981 as an arts collective, played the 139-seat Shure Theater near Kerrytown from 2000 with plenty of premieres, and closed at the end of 2015.

Performance Network began in 1981 as an arts collective founded by David Bernstein and Jim Moran and grew into Ann Arbor's professional Equity theater, signing an Actors' Equity contract in 1997. In 2000 it moved from its Washington Street warehouse to a new theater at Fourth and Huron near Kerrytown, whose main stage, the Shure Theater, seated 139. It produced five to seven main-stage plays a year, many of them world or Michigan premieres, plus new-play festivals and children's programming. On December 18, 2015, it announced it would close at the end of that year.
