Winans built the congregation into one of the city's largest and most prominent churches while continuing his music career, and he has remained its senior pastor ever since, presiding over weddings, funerals and services for generations of Detroit families, including high-profile figures in music, sports and politics. The church became known for its music ministry, reflecting the Winans family's deep roots in gospel, and it grew to occupy a large campus on the city's east side.
