01 / Story
The station’s story
Planned as Beaubien/Fort, it opened named after its neighbourhood, Bricktown. It stands on Beaubien Street just north of Congress Street, nearest to the Wayne County Building, Saint Andrew’s Hall, Cadillac Square and the Water Board Building; a rear entrance leads into the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan headquarters, for staff only.
It is one of the People Mover’s quietest stations: 49,424 boardings in 2019 and 29,334 in 2024, the fewest on the loop. It reopened after the pandemic on November 21, 2022.
In 2024 Anthony Lee’s mural “Detroit Music Love” went up outside; according to a 2025 MLive story it features Aretha Franklin, Eminem, Smokey Robinson and Big Sean, whose father stopped to admire his son among the legends.

What you see from the car
From the platform the Renaissance Center towers loom to the south, and Greektown’s neon is already visible to the north. The cornices of the old brick buildings seem close enough to touch.
