A modest brick bungalow on Garland Street where Black physician Ossian Sweet and his family faced down a violent mob in 1925, a landmark civil rights case defended by Clarence Darrow.

This brick bungalow was built in 1919, and in September 1925 Dr. Ossian Sweet, a Black physician, moved in with his wife and young daughter, becoming the first Black family on the block in a neighborhood that had made clear it wanted to stay all-white. On their second night in the house, a mob of hundreds gathered outside, and when the crowd began throwing stones and pressing toward the house, shots were fired from inside, killing one man in the crowd. Sweet, his family and several friends who had been in the house for protection were charged with murder, and the NAACP hired famed attorney Clarence Darrow to defend them; after one mistrial, an all-white jury acquitted Sweet's brother Henry in a second trial, a landmark moment for Black homeowners' rights in the North. The house remains privately owned today, a Michigan State Historic Site and a National Register of Historic Places property since 1985.
