Osborn High School opened in February 1957 in the Osborn neighborhood on Detroit's northeast side, and was named for Laura Freele Osborn, the first woman to serve as president of the Detroit Board of Education. It remains a public high school within the Detroit Public Schools Community District. In the late 1980s, a teenage Eminem, not yet enrolled there, sneaked into the school's lunchroom with his friend Proof to take part in freestyle rap battles among Osborn students, an early proving ground before either of them became recording artists. The school continues to educate students from the surrounding neighborhood today.
