Father Józef Dąbrowski, a Polish-born priest who had already built a network of Polish Catholic schools and religious orders in Michigan and Wisconsin, established this seminary campus on Orchard Lake in 1909 to train Polish-American priests. The campus grew to include what's now known as SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary alongside St. Mary's Preparatory School, together forming the Orchard Lake Schools, long considered the heart of Polish-American Catholic life in the state. Generations of Polish immigrant families sent their sons to study here, and the campus built a reputation well beyond Michigan as one of the country's most important centers of Polish Catholic heritage and language. The schools continue to operate on the same lakeside grounds today, over a century after Dąbrowski founded them.
