02 / The story of this place
Make time for these
Opera Grand Rapids was organized in May 1966 and incorporated that July as the Opera Association of Western Michigan. Its first production, The Marriage of Figaro, opened on June 2, 1967 at Calvin College's Fine Arts Center with Grand Rapids Symphony music director Carl Karapetian conducting, and drew about 3,500 people over five performances. The company is based at the Betty Van Andel Opera Center on East Fulton Street, where it stages chamber operas, and presents grand opera at DeVos Performance Hall. The 2026-27 season includes Jake Heggie's Three Decembers (November 6), the play-with-music Souvenir and Bizet's Carmen (April 30, 2027).

Summer & outdoor theater / Grand Rapids
Circle Theatre
Grand Rapids' summer community theatre since 1953. It started in a hotel room, then played a park pavilion that housed the zoo's monkeys in winter. Today it's at Aquinas College's Performing Arts Center.

A small black-box stage on State Street SE in Grand Rapids that local companies, comedians and performers rent for their own shows. The new Dog Star Series adds three bigger productions a year.
