This 114,000-square-foot ice complex opened in Rochester Hills in 1999 with three NHL-sized rinks, quickly becoming one of the busiest figure skating and hockey training centers in Metro Detroit. Todd Eldredge, the six-time U.S. men's figure skating champion and 1996 world champion, trained here in the 2000s after his longtime coach Richard Callaghan moved his operation to the Detroit area in the 1990s; Eldredge had already built much of his career at the nearby Detroit Skating Club before adding sessions at Onyx. Ownership of the rink changed hands in 2017, and the facility was renamed Suburban Ice Rochester in 2020, though longtime skaters still sometimes call it Onyx. The arena remains open today for hockey, figure skating and public skating.
