Make time for these
Father Martin Kundig founded St. Mary's parish in 1834 for German-speaking Catholic immigrants, making it Detroit's third-oldest Catholic parish. The first church rose in 1841 on land Antoine and Monica Beaubien sold to the bishop for a single dollar. Today's church was built in 1884–1885, designed by German-born parishioner Peter Dederichs. Inside are three grottos, including a replica of the Shrine of Lourdes. Amid Monroe Street's restaurants and casino lights, it's a striking surprise.
