Originally part of Hamtramck Township, the North End was annexed by Detroit in 1891 and took its name from being the northern end of the area then known as Paradise Valley. It boomed alongside the auto industry in the 1920s and 1930s and became one of Detroit's most important Black neighborhoods, home for decades to musicians who would define Motown: Smokey Robinson grew up here on Belmont Street in the 1940s and 1950s, just a few houses from Aretha Franklin, and the Four Tops also came up in the neighborhood. Clubs along Oakland Avenue such as the Phelps Lounge and the Apex Bar booked touring soul and R&B stars including James Brown, Etta James and George Clinton. Decades of population loss and disinvestment hit the North End hard after the 1960s, but Oakland Avenue's commercial corridor is seeing renewed investment today, including community projects like the Oakland Avenue Urban Farm.
