Menjo's opened in December 1974 near Palmer Park and went on to become Detroit's longest-running gay dance club, famous as the place where a teenage Madonna danced. Pride Source credits it as the first Detroit club where DJs mixed records live, and the original 1970s disco ball still hangs over the dance floor. Today it is a multi-room complex: the Menjo's bar and dance floor, the Eagle leather bar in the former Glass House space, and the Olympus Theater event hall. Its walls hold queer-history memorabilia collected from closed Detroit gay bars, and the crowd is mixed and welcoming, with karaoke, DJ and theme nights.
