After the legendary Hip Hop Shop closed, Detroit's underground rap scene needed somewhere new to gather, and for a stretch in the late 1990s and mid-2000s, Lush Lounge on Joseph Campau Avenue in Hamtramck filled that role. Its Wednesday night open mics drew local MCs looking to sharpen their skills and build reputations in front of a live crowd, and Marv Won, one of Detroit's respected battle rappers and part of the city's wider hip-hop network around that era, was among the performers who came through. The scene eventually moved on, Lush Lounge closed in the mid-2000s, and the storefront sat vacant for years afterward, a quiet stretch on a Hamtramck commercial strip that once helped keep the city's hip-hop community connected between its bigger, more famous venues.
