In 1983 developer Mike Higgins turned the grand ballroom of the 1927 Leland Hotel into a club first called Liedernacht, renamed City Club in 1985. For four decades it was one of America's oldest goth and industrial clubs, a late-night haven for goths, punks and ravers with covers of $3–4 for years, run by manager Sybil Carter from its early days, and Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Rob Zombie, the Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumpkins, Public Enemy, Skinny Puppy and Depeche Mode are among the acts that played there. The club shut on December 3, 2025, when building management closed the Leland House amid a Chapter 11 bankruptcy and a DTE power-shutoff threat.
