The City of Detroit opened this recreation center on McGraw Avenue in 1921 to serve the surrounding southwest-side neighborhood. In 1971, local trainer Emanuel Steward began running an amateur boxing program in its basement, and over the following decades that low-ceilinged, sweat-soaked room became the Kronk Gym, one of the most famous boxing gyms in the world. Steward turned it into a factory for champions: Thomas Hearns trained here from the 1970s until the gym closed, Hilmer Kenty became the first Kronk fighter to win a world title in 1980, Milton McCrory and his brother Steve trained here alongside him, and Frank Tate came up through the same amateur and professional ranks. The recreation center closed in 2006 as the city cut its budget, and the abandoned building sat deteriorating for years until an October 2017 fire gutted the old basement gym; the city demolished what was left in September 2018. The Kronk name lives on today in a new gym that opened in 2025 inside the former Brewster-Wheeler Recreation Center.
