Make time for these
Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas; it became a federal holiday in 2021. In Detroit, Juneteenth Jubilee has stretched the celebration into a full weekend since 2019, started by Zsa Zsa Hubbard and friends to educate, celebrate and activate the city. The lineup moves around town: in 2023 it included a stroll on the Avenue of Fashion and Freedom Fest at Eastern Market. In 2026 the eighth edition was led by Black Leaders Detroit with Marygrove Conservancy: Friday's Liberation Link Up brought live music and a $5,000 grant voted on by the crowd, and Saturday's free Jubilee on the Block took over the Dexter Avenue corridor, once a hub of Black-owned business.
- Jubilee on the Block: a free block party with live music, a kid zone and the Taste of Freedom Bake-off
- Dexter Freedom Day Ride, a group bike ride up Dexter
- Liberation Link Up: an evening mixer with a $5,000 grant for Black creatives
- Black-owned businesses and local vendors
